Field Notes:
- Date & Time: March 25, 2026, afternoon
- Species: Eastern Carpenter Bee (Xylocopa virginica)
- Weather: Warm, 70°F sunny, slight breeze
- Location: Bluegrass Region, Central Kentucky urban-park meadow.
Observation
Found this Eastern Carpenter Bee, buzzing around a blooming Redbud tree. Male carpenter bees fly towards anticipated predators to protect their territory. Fortunately, male carpenter bees lack stingers, unlike their female counterparts. Female carpenter bees tend to be docile and sting only when provoked.

Life Cycle and Habitat
Eastern Carpenter Bees have a long lifespan and follow a single annual life cycle.
- Spring: Overwintered adults emerge in mid-spring to mate.
- Summer: Females create tunnels, lay eggs, and care for their larvae. New adults emerge in late summer.
- Fall/Winter: New adults forage in the fall, then hibernate in tunnels, and emerge the following spring.
Social & Nesting Habits
Unlike ground or hive bees, Eastern Carpenter Bees are solitary and bore tunnels in dead wood or soft timber to create their nurseries. Despite their solitary nature, they may nest near one another, creating neighborhoods.
Pollen & Nectar Sources

Eastern Carpenter Bees, the generalists, forage for many different flower species. But they do have a particular fondness for:
- Eastern Redbud: A critical early spring nectar source.
- Blueberries: They are excellent pollinators for these fruit crops.
- Salvia & Bee Balm: They often “rob” nectar from long-tubed flowers by cutting a hole in the base.
Fun Facts
Carpenter bees can be distinguished from bumblebees by their abdomen. They have a shiny, hairless black “butt,” while bumblebees are covered in fuzz.
Despite their buzzing and hovering behavior, male carpenter bees lack a stinger.
Carpenter bees are nature’s carpenters. Their strong mandibles can vibrate and drill perfectly circular holes into wood.
